Introduction
This section focuses on resource mobilisation for sexual and reproductive health programmes and projects. The European Community has become a leading player in implementing the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in Cairo in 1994. As one of the largest providers of development assistance, the Community recognises the need to further increase and improve its support for reproductive health in the future.
Despite this, ten years after the ICPD, access to sexual and reproductive health services remains inadequate; people cannot access the information and services needed to enable them to make informed choices on the size of their families or to prevent HIV infection and too many women are unable to ensure the safe outcome of their pregnancy.
